Continued from page 1 Cliff's 100th! his speech to the revelers. The government of France, in the wake of commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the first World War announced that Cliff would be awarded the Legion d'Honneur for his service in France during that war. Cliff served in the Canadian Army in the trenches in France. The President of France and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kindom led the commemoration of Armistice Day in France with a number of World War I veterans in attendance. After the war, Cliff came to California where he was a pioneer in movie lighting and later in adding sound to the “Talkies.” Cliff became politically active in the United States of America when Franklin Delano Roosevelt was President. Cliff was a strong supporter of President Roosevelt and of the Social Security system that was set up by FDR. Cliff has been a leader in the National Council of Senior Citizens, the the Congress of California Seniors and in the Gardena Valley Democratic Club for decades. He is one of the leaders in the fight against “privatizing” Social Security and Medicare. In the photograph on page 1 Cliff is onstage speaking at the Nakaoka Center, which was festooned with a rainbow of balloons. On the left is Cliff’s grandson David Goodale--a very large man--and behind the lectern is Cliff’s old friend Inell Woods, who emceed the event. Inell is the mother of Jimmie Woods-Gray, who recently was the Chair of the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee.	DO-NOTHING REPUBS The 105th Congress, under Speaker Newt Gingrich, produced less legislation than any Congress this century! The most lasting legislation they passed was to rename the Washington International Airport the “Ronald Reagan Airport.” The only Congress that even comes CLOSE to this DO-NOTHING CONGRESS was the 104th Congress, also led by Speaker Newt Gingrich. The Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Armed Forces along with other members of the Joint Chiefs testified before a House Committee that Newt Gingrich and the Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott (also a Republican), have WEAKENED the security of the United States by authorizing weapons systems that the Pentagon doesn’t even want! They pointed out the decades-old Lockheed C-130 transport aircaft – built in then-Speaker Gingrich’s Congressional District – an aircraft which the Pentagon no longer wants to procure. These unwanted C-130s are flown to an air base in Mississippi (Senator Trent Lott’s State) that the Pentagon wants to close down! While the Republican Congress authorized these pork-barrel projects for the Republican leaders, the Douglas Aircraft plant in Long Beach–which builds the C-17 transport that the Pentagon DOES want–laid off workers and they had to fight to keep the C-17 program going! Workers HERE paid the price–unemployment–for the Republican Leaders’ pork barrels!
