SALUTE TO SENATOR RALPH C. DILLS

Senator Dills was a founding member of the Gardena Valley Democratic Club in 1932 and was one of our first Club Presidents in 1935 and 1936! He was first elected to the State Assembly in 1938 and served us as a Municipal Court Judge before being elected to the State Senate in 1966. Senator Dills will be retiring in November.

Our plans for this event have been cancelled. Our Club members will participate in other tributes to Senator Dills.

CLIFFORD HOLLIDAY'S 100th BIRTHDAY PARTY

One of the leaders of our Club for many decades and a national leader in the fight to save Social Security and Medicare and to bring American health care into the 20th Century, Cliff will celebrate that magic number. Cliff also fought in the trenches in the Great War (the First_ World War) in the Royal Canadian Army and was a pioneer in the movie lighting industry and in movie sound. Almost 30 years ago he helped pioneer the Neighborhood Watch program! Cliff still travels to Washington, D.C., to participate in National Council of Senior Citizens meetings and is a leader of the Congress of California Seniors.

Cliff expects a congratulatory telegram from Queen Elizabeth II! The City of Gardena will be hosting the event, in which we will participate.

[Postcard for Chief Lee Baca speaking at our Feb. 15, 1998, Club Breakfast]

Candidate for Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca speaking at our February 15th Sunday Breakfast. Many Club members liked Chief Baca's crime _prevention_ approach, seeing it as refreshing compared to the "throw 'em all in jail and throw away the key" mentality that is prevalent these days.

Saturday, January 17th, 1998

Gardena Valley Democratic Club members marching and riding in the 1998 Martin Luther King, Jr., Parade on January 17th in Gardena, California. As always, one of our main themes was to "PROTECT SOCIAL SECURITY & MEDICARE!" A large number of other Club members participated in official roles in the Parade and in the ceremonies that followed commemorating the slain Civil Rights leader.
