Help us celebrate the
60th Anniversary of Social Security
and the 30th Anniversary of Medicare
Sunday, August 13th, 1995
from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
at the Ken Nakaoka Community Center
1700 West 162nd Street (just east of Western Ave.)
in Gardena, California
On August 14th, 1935, in the midst of the Great Depression,
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Bill authorizing the Social
Security system. Ever since, it has provided a sense of security to most
of our citizens. In less than 15 years, with worries about their futures
behind them, working Americans built America into the greatest economic
power in the history of the world. We are going to celebrate those times
and pay tribute to the generations of Americans who made this country great.
In July 1965, over the fierce opposition of Republican members of Congress,
the Medicare bill was passed. It was signed by President Lyndon Baines Johnson
at the Harry S. Truman Library to honor the President who first proposed
a National Health Care system some twenty years earlier. The Medicare Bill's
author was our own Congressman Cecil R. King. Millions of Americans -- and
not only senior citizens -- rely on Medicare and Medicaid for their very
existence. We've got to fight to preserve Medicare AND Social Security.
Everyone can help, and everyone is welcome at our Celebration.
And, no. You don't have to put on a '30's costume to come. We'll be playing
Big Band music on our "jukeboxes" and we'll try to have a 30's
atmosphere. We'll all have a good time. If you can help, please volunteer.
We've got something for everyone to do. We are always thankful for another
casserole!
